The Smatchet is all about function. Just holding a Smatchet instills confidence and a grim determination for getting the job done. The design is based on the Royal Welch Fusiliers trench blade, its very name became a byword for guts, glory and bravery. Our modern interpretation of this military classic features the same broad spear point and false edge with the addition of a strong steel-reinforced guard and rugged weather-proof handle.

A very likable large knife or short machete. Useful in yard or garden for chopping, slicing and even digging. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of five is the thinness of the blade.. 2mm I think. It wouldnt be that difficult to make these a 3mm or even 2.5… Doubtful it will break but a heavier blade would be stronger and more powerful in the strike.
Also, a higher grade of steel, even 1060 would have aided in edge retention.. Having waited for years for something like this, I am pleased!

After some modifications, this is a very useful camp/garden tool. In the unlikely event of the zombie apocalypse or an attack by swashbuckling pirates, it’s almost perfect as is.

    PROS:
    – Packably short, but long enough for most camp tasks.
    – Thick blade tough enough for hard tasks like digging.
    – Very acute tip can pierce virtually anything.
    – Continuous curved edge slices effortlessly.
    – Chops better than traditional machetes of this length.
    – Came sharp and very easy to hone.
    – Very comfortable handle.
    – Hooked butt keeps machete in hand during hard use.
    – Reinforced metal guard is great for sword fights with pirates or avoiding zombie bites.

    CONS:
    – Requires real modification to be camp/garden ready.
    – Metal reinforced guard/quillon gets in the way.
    — Prevents use of different grips.
    — Makes choking up to carve impossible.
    — Best modified by cutting top guard off.
    – Swedge gets in the way of camp/garden use.
    — Makes it impractical to hold blade or baton.
    — Can be modified by filing flat.
    – Handle has no traction. Can be modified with athletic tape.
    – Baked-on blade coating wears poorly.
