MacheteSpecialists.com carries a wide variety of Ralph Martindale products. These machetes are made in their wholly-owned manufacturing plant in Thailand.  The Martindale “Crocodile” brand blades are made from hot rolled high quality British Steel, produce in the Martindale’s own mill.

What sets the Martindale “Crocodile” blades apart is the tapered strip section used to better the chopping and cutting characteristics of the blade through optimizing the weight of the tool.

As for Martindale “Crocodile” machete handles, these are made from German beech wood and the timber is cross-sown for maximum strength and stability. Additionally, the handle is fitted to the blade with solid steel rivets and washers.

I like the design, weight and balance but the one I have is so soft it will not take an edge. I took it to a professional and he attempted to put an edge on it. He confirmed my suspicion that the temper is bad. Too bad too if this design had been done correctly it would a heck of tool.

If you take the time to sharpen it and put some boiled linseed oil on the handle, these things are a beast. I have chopped down a 6inch oak with one, and also have used it to clear vines with little to no trouble. Packs nice into a backpack as well

Had one many years ago lost it in moving saw the price of these and had to buy. Was pleasantly surprised with the fit and finish of my new number 2. The handles were flush. The blade actually had a good primary grind and decent utility edge. Now just to get a sheath for it. Overall im happy with my purchase and pleased to see the upgrades in out the door product. Only fault is handle is a little slippery.

Comes very dull quickly establishing why these were referred to as ‘tree beaters’ by the forces that they were issued to.

However if you make a large convex the bevel from 3/8″ to about 7/8″ back from the bottom to the top this becomes a ferocious chopper. Very good in close close quarters with both dead or green hard or soft woods.

Out of the box, it is more of a bludgeon than a cutting tool. It needs reprofiling and thinning beyond what I can do with hand tools. Maybe when I get my belt sander set up…

Great heft and feel, but the edge needs a whole lot of work to make it the chopper it should be.

I am a collector of machetes as a hobby. Mine came more sharp than any other martindale I have. As all machetes require blade work from the factory I did a quick few with a file and chopped a 40cyear old unmaintained japanese barberry down in 14 minutes. Given the short length of the blade and hardness of the shrub was very impressive. Getting more for the cars.

Such as chopping wood and then slicing tomatoes (not a joke or exaggeration), with no re-working of the grind angle needed (due to the distal taper).

  9. John Wesley-Knox

Not impressed. Blade’s just way too thick, and the grind angle is too obtuse. Only a belt sander can fix it. Machetespecialists would do well to order in a crate of the Pattern No. 4-01 Jungle Knife. It’s got the Ministry of Defence Broad Arrow, and is a more versatile tool that does everything the #2 Golok ought to but can’t, and a bunch of stuff the #2 can only watch with envy.

  11. it’s a beast!

I bought mine a couple years ago. it’s short and fairly heavy, but has a good balance. I have used and abused it, but it a tough beast and can take it. I have hacked grass from around game cameras and I have cut down sizeable limbs. handle is still solid with no movement. holds a very keen edge.

    it’s a beast!

A nice machete for cracking mature coconuts. With 500+ grams it has a good weight to it and makes it a sturdy blade for your everyday chopping. When I picked it up the edge was as described online a factory finish. After giving it a good sharpening on a decent 1000/2000 & 3000/8000 it turned out pretty damn sharp. This is totally up to you though…
