It’s probably been close to 10 years since I bought this 5-pack. My family has given them a lot of use on our small farm cutting brambles, brush, privet, etc. I’ve even used the longer ones to chop down up to 6″ trees when I haven’t had an axe available. They’re basic utilitarian machetes that, all in all, seem to do their job very well (although I’ve never used more expensive machetes or really any other machetes at all for comparison), except for the 13″ cane machete which I’ve found pretty worthless and is the reason I knocked one star off. For a machete of that shape/style it seems like it needs more weight to be useful and that it’s too flimsy. I’ve been perfectly satisfied with the metal quality on the other ones, though, and they’re holding up very well however many years later. My children use the other two smaller machetes regularly and like them, maybe even prefer them, but I almost always prefer the additional weight and swing of the two plastic handled ones. Every once in a while the bolo style machete has seemed useful to me to fill a specific niche. Although my children regularly use the 12″ machete, I’m not sure why they like it. I would pretty much never choose it. Maybe if it were heavier I’d use a machete that small. Especially when wearing gloves, I’ve occasionally let some of these machetes fly by accident. More of a fatter section at the bottom (like on an axe or hatchet handle) or something else like that might be an upgrade. All in all, I’m quite happy with them.

i bought mine the one issue i seen on many sites is the blade can rust because it has no paint or sealant on it- true so i had some tail gate spray coating from rustoleum- it”s like a rubberized paint- so i sprayed the machete with it let it dry then went out cut some wood brush- etc- the coating course did not last long on the blade as well as appliance paint holds to a machete but it does offer protection to all other parts of the blade i also sprayed the handles and that gave a better grip= not as rough as you get with a textured paint- i like it- on the plastic handles one i took off that bottom rivet part that suppose be a back of hand slip guard hate those things- the rivet is for show no blade attached to it and cut it off see the handle is hollow- so i sprayed stuff in there and melted plastic to help close the home wrapped electrical tape around the end so be a small knob as a hand guard that way more comfortable- course could use pc-7 epoxy or bondo whatever to shape your own- but now i can swing the things nicely and safely- now on the wooden ones the only handle issue was the back of the handle so i made a grove for my little finger to sink lower on the handle and love that- again sprayed whole thing with the rustolium bed liner stuff- and i real good with that- so over all much happier with the things and they easier to handle and blade seems a little stiffer i hacked up our Christmas tree de branched it with the 22″ plastic handle one and did it in no time course got the things stupid sharp- and with wooden handle one took care of a fairly big brush pile i building den for the possums that visit- so with that i say these are very nice with a little work- ps u can drill a hole on the wooden handle ones about 1
” dead center on the end i drilled quarter ” bit then flagged them with red trail tape and i good you can make the hole bigger but don’t need it-

I picked up some of these years ago and have used the Bolo with wooden handles quite a bit. I spent over a year exploring the back roads and BLM lands of the southwest US in a 4×4 camper truck. I used it for just about everything including cleaning fish. The blade has held up amazingly well. Would not trade it for another. It rides under the back seat with the cold steel shovel as a top go to cutting tool around camp on the next adventure for now. This is an amazingly good price for the blade you get.

Knocked off a star for the price increase. Not a bad deal if you don’t know what you want in a machete, or if you just want to try some different styles.

These are thin-gauge steel, so do not expect them to do a lot of chopping. They will work great on grasses and smaller green wood, but will curl on hardwood or seasoned dead wood.
I find the 14” bolo quite useful around the yard, very light and nimble. The reach of the longer blades comes in handy in grasses.

None of these would be my favorite light machete. Those would be the 18” Tramontina Latin machete and the 16” Imacasa bolo.

This is a very good deal. Tramontina has very high quality steel that won’t roll or chip, it sometimes just dents. The fact that they aren’t distally tapered makes them slightly floppier, harder to get used to, but they have more weight forward, which means they chop very well. THe 24″ is a workhorse, although 20″ is my favorite. The 12″ is useful, but its chopping power is limited because its weight is balanced, not forward. The Bolo hits very well for chopping, although the 20″ and 24″ both hit harder. It is also a less versatile blade shape that I don’t use all that often. These are very tough machetes, with decent handles, although the plastic should be covered with a grip. I definitely recommend this purchase.
